Freshly laid turf needs proper care to ensure it roots well and grows into a healthy, long-lasting lawn. At The Landscape Centre, turf is freshly cut daily to maintain top quality—meaning proper aftercare starts the moment it’s delivered.
Here’s everything you need to know about looking after your new turf.
1. Lay Turf Immediately
Fresh turf should be laid the same day it is delivered. This helps it “knit” into the soil quickly and prevents the grass from drying out or deteriorating. Leaving turf rolled up can cause heat build-up and damage the roots, especially in warm weather.
2. Water Thoroughly After Laying
Once the turf is laid, watering is essential. Give it a deep watering so the moisture reaches the soil below. This supports the roots as they begin to grow into the ground.
3. Keep Watering in Dry Weather
On days with no rain, it’s recommended to use a sprinkler to cover the full lawn evenly. Missing even small sections can result in patches drying out and failing to establish.
4. Your Responsibility After Delivery
Once the turf is delivered and laid, it becomes the customer’s responsibility to keep it alive. Like any living product, turf needs care to thrive—especially during the first few weeks.
Failure to water or lay the turf quickly can lead to poor establishment, which may affect the final result.
5. Check for Proper Rooting
After around two weeks, try gently lifting a corner of turf. If you feel resistance, it’s a sign the roots have started to take hold. At this point, watering can be reduced gradually.
6. First Mow
Wait until the turf has rooted before mowing. Keep the blades high during the first few cuts to avoid stressing the new grass. Never mow when the turf is wet.
