Pipe Bedding Sand and Spring Drainage Prep: What You Need to Know

Pipe Bedding Sand and Spring Drainage Prep: What You Need to Know

Get your outdoor space ready for spring with proper drainage planning and reliable materials.

As the ground begins to thaw and wetter conditions return, spring is the ideal time to address drainage issues in gardens and landscaping sites. Whether you’re preparing for pipework, trenching, or soakaway installations, using the right materials now can prevent major problems later.

That’s where pipe bedding sand comes in — and at The Landscape Centre, we supply it in convenient 25kg bags, ready for next working day delivery.

What Is Pipe Bedding Sand?

Pipe bedding sand is a clean, fine aggregate used to support underground drainage pipes and systems. It provides a cushioned layer around pipes, reducing the risk of damage from soil pressure, surface loads, or shifting ground.

This sand is specifically chosen for its consistency and particle size, allowing for:

  • Even compaction around pipes

  • Good drainage through the trench

  • Reliable long-term support

Why Use Pipe Bedding Sand in Spring?

Spring often brings wetter conditions — which is when poor drainage becomes most obvious. Water pooling, slow run-off, or muddy areas are all signs that your garden or site needs attention.

Installing a proper drainage system before summer arrives helps protect lawns, paved areas, and structures from water damage. Pipe bedding sand allows you to install or repair these systems safely and effectively.

It’s commonly used in:

  • Soakaways

  • Drainage trenches

  • Land drains

  • Irrigation lines

  • Surface water collection systems

How to Use Pipe Bedding Sand

1. Excavate your trench
Make sure it’s deep enough to house the pipe, plus a layer of sand below and above.

2. Lay your bedding layer
Add a consistent 100mm layer of pipe bedding sand to the bottom of the trench. Rake level and lightly compact it.

3. Place your pipe
Install the pipe carefully, ensuring it rests evenly across the bedding layer.

4. Surround and protect
Backfill around the pipe with more pipe bedding sand, covering it fully to a recommended depth. Compact gently in layers.

5. Complete with subsoil or backfill
Once the pipe is fully surrounded and supported, you can continue with trench reinstatement using suitable fill.
